Mr. Anthony Johnson will present a program at Bethesda UM Church, 116 East Main St., Middletown, DE May 9 at 6:30 PM. He will discuss the history and format of the Singing and Praying Band, which is an a cappella style of sacred music which can be traced back to the time of slavery. The Delaware Maryland singing group has 50 members who
are keeping this tradition from becoming extinct. In 2014 they received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts. You may access examples of this band by using the following:

Mr. Johnson will also give an overview of the birth of Methodism in colonial America. From Barrett's Chapel the Reverends Asbury, Wesley, Henry Hosier (Black Harry) and others spread this religion as circuit riders.
